Named after a recording technique. Funny fact, they never met to record this album, each one did his part and then Neal Morse mix them up. 'All Of The Above' the 30 minutes ruler of the album set the base for what this band become, 'My New World' A Roine Stolt main idea... and a cover 'In Held T'was' original by Procol Harum (1968).

Bridge Across Forever (2001)

2nd studio album. Two main epics 'Duel With The Devil' (26 min) and 'Stranger in your Soul' (30 min), 1 outstanding not-so-epic-for-them-but-still-epic 'Suite Charlotte Pike' (14 min) and the 5 minutes cherry in the top of the gigantic pie 'Bridge Across Forever'.

Live In America (2001)

By this time they had only one album released.
They filled in with covers : Some 'Strawberry Fields Forever' in Mystery Train, a Genesis medley (Back in NYC, Watcher of the Skies, Firth of Fifth) and a cover from each band 'There is More to This World', 'Go the Way You Go', 'The Great Escape', 'Finally Free'.

Live In Europe (2003)

One of the all time epic prog statement. The fantastic 4 + the amazing Daniel Gildenlöw teach us what is prog about.
The beatlesque track 'Charlotte Pike' is turned into a meddley with the last half of 'Abbey Road' spread all over it. This version has a live version of 'Shine on you crazy diamond' at the end.
+ A double DVD pack.

2. Agents of Mercy

This is a collaboration between Stolt and some dude named Nad Sylvan. Good guitars, keyboard, and so on. Also Jonas Reingold is credited because he did bass parts.

3. The Flower Kings

They are the culmination of decades of development of the idea of "progressive music". The leader of this phenomenal band is the incredible Roine Stolt, previously the guitarist and co-composer of Swedish prog rock band Kaipa in the 70's. After doing disco albums for about ten years in the 80's he released the amazing album The Flower King in 1994 and from then on the Third Wave of Prog was born (though some say Anglagard started it, or even others before them). After the warm reception Stolt got from The Flower King, he decided to form a band based on the idea of creating amazing progressive music. Over the years he assembled an amazing collection if supremely talented musicians such as Jonas Reingold (leader of Karmakanic and also a member of The Tangent and a reformed Kaipa) and Tomas Bodin, known for his own solo albums which Roine helped him to produce.

Back in the World of Aventures - 1995

The first official Flower Kings album but sometimes considered the second by people who don't consider The Flower King a Roine Stolt solo album. Like The Flower King, Roine seems to have followed the formula of sandwiching amazing instrumental songs between equally amazing epics (with some vocal songs in between the instrumentals). The epics are, in this case 'World of Adventures' and 'Big Puzzle'.

Retropolis - 1996

Roine dropped his "instrumentals between epics" idea on this album, and began focusing on songs.

Stardust We Are - 1997

Unless you count Humanizzimo, this is the first Flower Kings album to contain a "mega epic". In this case, the song is the title track, Stardust We are. Though the rest of the album is quite good as well, it is in fact the centerpiece (even if it's at the end :o) ). Other highlights are the energetic 'In the Eyes of the World' and the unusual 'Circus Brimstone'.

Space Revolver - 2000

This time the album is sandwiched between two epics that are both parts of a whole, 'I Am the Sun'.

The Rainmaker - 2001

Highlights are, as usual, the epics : 'Last Minute on Earth', 'Road to Sanctuary', and 'City of Angels'. I happen to have the bonus tracks for this album which are consisting in a 2nd CD.

Flower Power - 2001

The first half of this album is the "mega mega epic" Garden of Dreams. It is an 18-song, hour long awesome suite of music. It is very unfortunate that the rest of the album isn't nearly as good. I read a review once for this album that suggested Garden of Dreams should have been its own album while the rest should have been reworked and released as something else. I completely agree.

Unfold the Future - 2002

At 2 1/2 hours, Unfold the Future is The Flower Kings' longest album. It even contains two mega epics : the first track, 'The Truth Will Set You Free', and the ending track, 'Devil's Playground'. Personally I think both are equally amazing, but most people tend to tell they prefer 'The Truth Will Set You Free'. The rest of the album is not quite as memorable as these epics, but it is still quite good. Also memorable is the normal length epic, 'Silent Inferno'.

Adam & Eve - 2004

Roine seems to have quit singing for this album, as Hasse Froberg seems to be much more noticeable. Epics are again at the beginning and end : 'Love Supreme' at the beginning and 'Driver's Seat' at the end. This is also the last album to have Daniel Gildenlow of Pain of Salvation as an official member. He sings lead vocals for the first and only time on the song 'A Vampire View'.

Paradox Hotel - 2005

Yet another incredibly long album, though still not quite as long as Unfold the Future. Paradox Hotel has a few really good epics like the mega epic 'Monsters & Men', and a few regular epics like 'End on a High Note' and 'Minor Giant Steps', however I think the whole album comes together so well that the whole thing might just be one huge epic. The only dark spot is Bavarian Skies, which was intended as a joke but ended up failing :P

The Sum of No Evil - 2007

Quite possibly my favorite album. While it only contains six songs, three of those songs are around 12 minutes long, and a fourth is at mega epic length, 25 minutes. The other two songs are around five minutes each, and one of those is a strangely delightful instrumental composed by Tomas Bodin.

Meet The Flower Kings (2003)

One of my two all time favorite live albums. Epic in every track and as a whole, 2 hours 33 minutes in 6 tracks (7 because Garden Of Dreams is cut out in two parts) a live show with little audience, made with the specific goal of releasing a live album and DVD.
At this time the line-up includes the amazing Daniel Gildenlöw giving hands at keyboards, guitars, percussions and stuff ; the a-show-by-its-own on the percussion kit, also whistle, chains bells, clown wannabe, and lot of noisy stuff Hasse Bruniusson, and of course the usual musicians Roine Stolt, Tomas Bodin, Jonas Reingold, Hasse Frogberg and Zoltan Csörsz. Thought it'll be more a drummer team along with Bruniusson and Gindenlöw at some parts.

The DVD gives 153 minutes of concert plus some short 'on the road' video takes of the band members.

BetchaWannaDanceStoopid!!! (2004)

This a collection of improvisations that Stolt grabbed from his bootleg archives and the whole sound has a surprinsingly good quality.

Circus Brimstone - BrimStoned In Europe (2005)

Circus Brimstone is TFK without Hasse, without the lead singer in their latest album you might think Sstolt got to sing more than he usually does. Well no ! They played a whole instrumental set statring with 'Cosmic Lodge' a piece from one Stolt solo album.

Instant Delivery (2006)

This is from the 'Paradox Hotel' Tour, so most of its tracks are from that album, but it picks a few tracks from every TFK album and even has some improvisations, like the 'Hey Jude' inside 'A kings prayer'.
The highlights for eg. could be 'Pioneers Of Aviation', powerful 'Life will kill you', 'Blade Of Cain' is played, and the ending of 'A kings Prayer'.
On a curious note, Stolt messed up a bit the lyrics in that one and Hasse jumped in to the rescue!
2 hours 31 minutes of live material, can't complain ;o)

Carpe Diem (Live in USA) (2008)

As far as I know this is the only recording Drummer Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson) have done with the band. 'Psychedelic Postcard' is played.

The Flower Kings are so full of ideas that even fan club albums are lengthy.
Usually full of bizarre, rare and experimentation stuffs and a lot of sense of humor. Good to listen to if you are a fan, not a good set to start with in this guys music.

This album is a pretend "Greatest hits" of a 7O's prog band called Swedish Family. This is clearly a joke, as the album is simply a solo album by Tomas Bodin :P

I AM - 2005

This album is unlike his previous four albums in that it is not simply instrumental, it is in fact a super epic three-part concept album that is both partly-autobiographical and fictional. It is rumored to be the first part of a three - part series, and for the love of the God.

Cinematograaf - 2008

Like I AM, this album is unlike previous solo albums of Mr. Bodin's, but it is not similar to I Am in any other way. It is a semi-ambient album that was created in the style of a movie score. I don't like this one a lot.

5. Kaipa

One of the basis in the country that was about to become the standard in prog music. A band of four with a 17 years old Roine Stolt just starting and a very proggy keyboards by Hans Lundin marked the way so Kaipa became one of the most appreciated acts in the 70’s (ni Sweden at least).

Can you imagine being a lead guitarist at 17 years old and writing half of the album that would become a classic and fix a new standard in the 70’s prog era? Roine can, the whole band can, they were all young and fans of the good old happy / melancholic early 60’s music. This instrumental album has a very unique sound, imho reproduced only by Änglagård later in the 90’s -- Possibly :o)

Second album was a bit less original than the 1st but keep the same spirit, you can heard much more complex compositions all over.

6. The Tangent

Here's one of my fave modern prog bands. A highly recommended project by Andy Tillison. Full of epics and prog riff thats reminds you of the early 7O's good old prog also a bit of the Parallel or 9O Degrees sark agressive side but moderate.
This international progressive rock supergroup was formed in 2002 by keyboardists Andy Tillison and Sam Baine of Parallel or 9O Degrees and The Flower Kings guitarist Roine Stolt, bassist Jonas Reingold and drummer Zoltan Csörsz. The septet was completed by renowned saxophonist David Jackson of Van Der Graaf Generator and multi-instrumentalist Guy Manning. Since 2003 amid several personnel changes.

Members are/were : Andy Tillison, Guy Manning, Jakko Jakszyk, Theo Travis, Roine Stolt, David Jackson, Jaime Salazar, Jonas Reingold, Zoltan Csörsz.

On june 30, 2008 Tillison informed that The Tangent and Beardfish unite (to fill the places left due to Reingold, Salazar and Jonsson depart) and that both bands will also continue existing by their own. They just made only one album.

7. Roine Stolt

A prog genius ? A prog genius !

Guitarist / singer /composer Roine Stolt led two of his country's most successful progressive rock bands : Kaipa in the 1970's and the Flower Kings from the 1990's onward. His distinctive guitar style combined David Gilmour's debonair mid-tempo, Steve Howe's sharp edges, and Frank Zappa's virtuosity. Or still somewhere between Beatles style and Canterbury style. His vision of a positive world governed by beauty (akin to Yes singer Jon Anderson or Neal Morse) gave his music an aura that appealed to many progressive rock fans.

FABULOUS !

n 2001, Marisuz Duda, Piotr Grudzinski and Piotr Kozieradzki decide to start a band. These three friends, who share a heavy metal and prog rock passion, founded the band Riverside in Warzaw, Poland. Influenced by Porcupine Tree and Tool, the band was soon seen as the main promise for the future of progressive rock.

Riverside's 2003 debut, 'Out of Myself', saw the band being signed to the prog metal label InsideOut. On InsideOut, they released the follow-up album 'Second Life Syndrome'. This second record was met with great enthusiasm in the prog rock scene. One of those enthusiasts was Mike Portnoy from the band Dream Theater. He invited Riverside to support Dream Theater's European tour in 2007.

That same year Riverside also released their third and most succesful album, 'Rapid Eye Movement'. In december 2008, Riverside went on their 'Reality Dream Tour' with art rock band Lazuli, which took them to all major venues in Europe.

LAZULI

Lazuli, founded in 1998, is an art rock band from France. According to the band, their music is somewhere between progressive rock & world electro mixed with poetry. Although their music is hard to describe, it is comparable to the symphonic and progressive music of Peter Gabriel and King Crimson.

The whole sound is brought together with unusual instruments. Band member Claude Leonetti even created his own instrument called the 'Leode'.

Lazuli's breakthrough in France came in 2003, when they released their second album 'Amnésie'. Because of their success they headlined the famous Montreux Jazz Festival in 2005, but it wasn't until 2007 that Lazuli had success outside of France. The progressive / symphonic music scene in particular, received their third album, 'En Avant Doute', with great enthusiasm.

The band is currently working on a new album to be released in 2009. In December 2008, Lazuli start the 'Reality Dream Tour' with prog rock band Riverside, which takes them to all major venues around Europe.

Kayak, founded in 1972, is the most successful symphonic / progressive rock band from the Netherlands ever. Influenced by early Yes and Genesis, Kayak soon created an unique 'dramatic' sound.

Their debut album 'See See the Sun' was released in 1973. 'Royal Bed Bouncer' (1975), Kayak's third album, even got the attention of American records labels. Three albums later Kayak had their biggest success when releasing 'Phantom of The Night' featuring hitsingle 'Ruthless Queen'. In 1981 they decided to call it a day.

Kayak reunited again in 1999. Between 2001 and 2006 Kayak released several albums and even a rock opera! In the beginning of 2008 their album 'Coming up For Air' was released and with the Anniversary Tour they are celebrating their 35 years anniversary.

▼ Premiers éléments
On constate que le rock progressif (RP) s'est surtout développé entre 1966 et 1975 en Angleterre. Quelques groupes en ont jeté les bases sans toujours avoir conscience de leur rôle pour l'avenir en tant que pionniers. Le RP a essaimé en Italie, en Allemagne, en France, aux Etats-Unis et au Japon. Les autres pays du monde ne jouent qu'un rôle anectodique tandis que Le continent africain dans son ensemble n'a pas produit un seul artiste à l'exception de l'Afrique du Sud. L'australie reste également l'une des régions les moins prolifiques du monde.

Voici par année, le nombre d'albums de RP édités. Le pic se situe en 1970 avec 31 albums.
1967 → 4 1968 → 8 1969 → 17 1970 → 31 1971 → 11 1972 → 9 1973 → 7 1974 < 5

Pourtant, après 1974, si l'on veut bien y regarder de plus près, le RP est loin de produire des albums médiocres de groupes obscurs. En voici quelques exemples pour l'année 1975 : Camel - The Snow Goose, Caravan - Cunning Stunts, Gentle Giant - Free Hand, Hatfield and the North - The Rotters' Club, Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn, Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here, Renaissance - Scheherazade and Other Stories, Triumvirat - Spartacus, Van Der Graaf Generator - Godbluff, etc. Les noms de Gilgamesh, Taï Phong, Trace, Wallenstein, SBB, Passport sont encore présent aussi.

Le terme "progressive rock", traduit finalement en français par "rock progressif" et non progressiste, apparaît régulièrement dans la presse musicale en 1971 pour désigner ce courant artistique.

The Beatles et The Beach Boys semblent avoir joué un rôle essentiel dans l'essor d'un nouveau courant artistique. Le 1er concept album de l'histoire est édité en juin 1967. Le 1er titre de RP est édité en décembre 1968 et dure 17:31. Ce n'est pas la durée du morceau qui est importante bien que ce soit une des caractéristiques du RP. C'est sa construction en 5 parties pour un seul titre. Un peu à la manière d'une oeuvre de musique classique.

En étudiant les dates de formation des groupes et les dates d'édition des albums, on s'appercoit rapidement dans quelle fourchette se situe l'âge d'or du RP. Ce n'est pas pour autant que les albums édités après 1975 ne représentent plus ce type de courant d'art. Le RP évolue et tout en établissant des normes qui l'éloignent du concept initial, des genres et sous-genres apparaissent qui viennent l'enrichir. Que ce soit grâce aux techniques nouvelles, que ce soit par l'apport de cultures musicales d'origines sans arrêt plus diverses, le RP éclate en une miriade de directions. Cette dispersion ainsi que le succès du Disco, du mouvement Punk et ensuite de la New Wave, finissent par miner le RP.

▼ Descente aux enfers
Durant les années 8o et quasiment jusqu'au milieu des années 90, le RP est réduit à peau de chagrin. Plus personne ne s'y intéresse. Seuls les nostalgiques en écoutent encore et perpétuent le souvenir des sixties et seventies. Mais ils sont isolés et considérés comme des loosers et des ringards aux yeux des jeunes générations. L'avènement de grands groupes de Funky et de New Wave éclipse totalement les sorties d'albums de RP. Il n'y a guère que le Japon qui perpétue le RP. Cependant, le reste du monde ignore cette abondante production qui reste donc confinée. Ars Nova, Gerard, Namba Hiroyuki, Motoi Sakuraba, Teru's Symphonia sont quelque-uns des groupes japonais dont il faut connaître le nom.

Les noms de quelques groupes parviennent quand-même à sortir de l'ombre même si leurs albums ne rencontrent qu'un succès mitigé à l'époque de leur sortie. IQ, Marillion sont parmi ceux-là. Durant les années 8o, les Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Supertramp, Machiavel, ELO, par exemple, parviennent encore à quelques succès. Mais il faut attendre les années 9o avant que les choses n'évoluent vers un renouveau. Après le néo-prog et son succès d'estime, le RP reprend peu à peu des couleurs. Mais très lentement. Quelques groupes parmi bien d'autres sortent de bien beaux albums qui viendront à la connaissance du public parfois 10 ans plus tard : Änglagård, Dream Theater, Roine Stolt, Porcupine Tree

▼ Vers un nouvel âge d'or
Ce qui donne réellement une impulsion à la redécouverte du RP, à la sortie d'une quantité d'albums et à l'éclosion de nouveaux groupes, c'est un média : Internet. Tard dans les années 9o, le RP retrouve un peu de lustre et redémarre une décennie très riche en terme de production. Quant à la qualité, elle est inégale. Dans la foulée de ce nouvel âge d'or du RP, Internet permet de découvrir des groupes et des albums des années 7o, 8o, 9o qui n'avaient bien souvent pas dépassé les frontières de leur pays faute d'avoir été convenablement distribués, faute de moyens financiers et/ou techniques. Les listes de discussions puis les forums et ensuite les blogs, ont été nettement les moteurs de cette relance et du regain d'intérêt pour un RP d'un nouveau genre. A propos des groupes, on peut citer The Flower Kings, Neal Morse, Dream Theater parmi bien d'autres. Ceux-ci étant certainement à la base des influences majeures des années 2000.

▼ Maintenant et après
Les nouveaux genres sont très discutables mais tous contribuent à l'évolution du RP. Il y a les conservateurs qui font un RP dit [i]Vintage[i] et qui utilisent les techniques contemporaines (prise de son numérique, studios) mais les instruments de musique des années 7o (Mellotron, Moog, Hammond), puis il y a les mouvances artistiques telles le Grunge, le Gothique, le Métal (ex Hard-rock) et les genres plus extrèmes comme le Death, le Trash et bien d'autres encore qui impriment un mouvement et une dimension supplémentaire au RP. L'évolution est toujours en marche et les influences, les courants d'art qui traversent le RP sont si nombreux que, bien malin qui pourrait prévoir ce que le RP va devenir. La seule certitude, c'est sans doute le petit nombre d'amateurs du genre à travers le monde et la quasi certitude que la musique en général ne sera plus liée à un support nécessairement palpable à l'aide des mains (disque) mais directement sous forme injectable dans les oreilles (virtuelle). Ce qui, finalement, rend à la musique sa dimension initiale et sa nature profonde : des ondes qui sont transportées par les airs jusqu'aux oreilles et que le cerveau transforme en musique.

• Les instruments du Rock Progressif •
▼ Premiers éléments
On constate que les groupes de RP n'échappent pas à un schéma conventionnel : batterie, basse, guitare, clavier, chant. Comment le pourraient-ils d'ailleurs à moins de tout faire tout seul ? Cependant, à la différence des groupes de rock classiques, on note l'apparition et l'utilisation quasi systématique d'instruments comme les percussions, les synthétiseurs, le Mellotron, le Moog et la guitare 12 cordes. Au début, fins des années 6o et jusqu'à tard dans les années 7o, les instruments utilisés ne sont pas réellement nouveaux et n'évoluent que très peu. Ce n'est que vers la fin des années 7o, quand apparaissent les boîtes à rythmes, les percussions électroniques et les tables de mixages numériques 24 pistes, qu'une nouvelle évolution voit le jour. L'élaboration d'un album passe désormais par une post-production qui finit par faire partie intégrante de la conception d'un album. Cette partie en studio égale parfois en longueur celle qui naît des instruments de musique et de la créativité humaine. Cependant, cette particularité n'en est pas une puisqu'elle affecte tous les styles de musique. Le RP y perd une certaine différence. Alors, le RP, bien que suivant des schémas assez traditionels dans l'instrumentation et les studios, utilise les instruments de de toutes les manières possibles et imaginables. Certains comme Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Christophe Godin ont tout fait avec leur guitare et en ont tiré tous les sons qu'ils pouvaient, de toutes les manières possible y compris avec la bouche. De la même façon avec les claviers, les percussions, de plus en plus nombreux : voyez comme certains musiciens s'entourent littéralement de murs d'instruments : Tony Banks et ses claviers, Mike Portnoy et ses hordes de fûts tout autour de lui...

▼ Premiers éléments
Le RP est pénétré de différents courants musicaux qui en constituent les influences majeures et forgent le noyau du RP. Ensuite, le RP constitue lui-même la source d'une grande quantité de nouveaux courants.

Je vous propose d'illustrer les courants du RP par une sélection de groupe qui se revendiquent eux-mêmes du courant en question ou que les amateurs y ont classé. Pour ceux qui n'aiment pas les classifications, une seule réponse : cela permet au néophyte de trouver des directions et à l'amateur averti de poursuivre sa quête dans un genre ou, au contraire, de façon éclectique.

Second album assez hermétique d'un groupe phare du Rock Progressif expérimental de la décennie post-néo des années 9O. Lorsque l'on sait quelle profusion d'artistes et d'oeuvres émanent du Nord de l'Europe, on sera à moitié étonné de savoir qu'Änglagård est un groupe suédois.
Bon dieu que ça fait du bien de (ré)écouter ça !

Supertramp n'est pas tout à fait un groupe de Rock comme les autres. Ce n'est pas non plus un groupe Pop ni de Rock Progressif. C'est un peu tout cela à la fois. Plutôt que de se farcir tout un album on va se plonger dans la carrière du groupe avec quelques morceaux marquants.

Histoire de Melody Nelson' is a bona-fide cult classic, this 1971 masterpiece was Serge Gainsbourg's first conceptually conceived album. The concept involves the middle-aged Gainsbourg who accidentally knocks teenage girl Melody Nelson off her bicycle while out driving in his Silver Ghost Rolls Royce and follows the subsequent infatuation, lust, seduction, blossoming romance and loss experienced by Gainsbourg.

After the albums release, a music video was made for each song from the album, each one a rare gem and worthy companion piece to the songs themselves.
